Neurological surgery, or neurosurgery, is concerned with prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, and research of disorders or injuries affecting the nervous system and associated tissues and organs.

Surgery is nationally and internationally recognized for innovative research efforts, high-quality training programs, and expert patient care. Clinical care takes place chiefly within the framework of the Department’s centers of excellence, including the Minimally Invasive endoNeurosurgery Center (MINC).
At MINC, UPMC neurosurgeons treat a wide range of brain and spinal conditions, using newer techniques that generally carry a lower risk of disfigurement and disability than conventional “open” surgical procedures. As an added benefit, post-operative recovery is often more rapid following minimally invasive procedures than is recovery from traditional open surgery.
